It’s also important to remember that even the concept of being transgender is a European idea. These cultural identities aren’t the “ethnic equivalent” of being trans and/or non-binary and they shouldn’t be reduced to such. They exist outside of European ideas of transness. Misogyny exists (immeasurable) in all non western countries. Should we celebrate it? Don’t celebrate something just because whos doing are non westerners. All of this cultures are very patriarchal and all those “third genders” are reserved for people who dont perform correctly the gender assigned to their sex. Feminine males? Cant be men, are considered “third gender”. Homosexual? “Third gender”. Also…Eunuch? “Third gender”. Intersex? “Third gender” Women and girls also either have to perform the feminine gender from these cultures or perform the feminine gender role. Theres no “third gender” reserved for them. Two-spirit/native third gender. Is basically just transphobia, homophobia and sexism with a coat of “"but it’s ok because they’re not white uwu”“. Transphobia is a global problem. Stop excusing it just because it has a native coat of paint. I want to share this clip from Kumu Hina, a documentary about [Kumu] Hina Wong-Kalu. Mahu in Hawaiʻi is open for both binary genders. And if men have “feminine traits”, they still are men in Hawaiian culture.I don’t quite understand why some people would use Mana Magazine as a why to demonize indigenous cultures? -- source link
