What I read in JuneIn the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume: As a huge fan of Summer Sisters, one of Judy Blume’s other ‘for adults’ novels, I was really excited to dig into this book. I hate to say it, but I found it disappointing. It didn’t feel particularly adult focused to start with, and it was hard to get into it. Every now and then my attention would be piqued by a plot point but otherwise it was pretty ho-hum. It is based on a true story of three planes crashing within 60 days of each other in Elizabeth, NJ but these tragedies didn’t feel like they were driving the conflict of the book as much as they could have. It was like reading two parallel stories that grazed each other occasionally. The Folded Clock by Heidi Julavits: Ah, true love. This was a real delight to read. One of those books where the narrative is a bit twisty but it doesn’t bother you because occupying Julavits’ head space and sentences carry you right along whether you know what is happening or not.A God In Ruins by Kate Atkinson: A bit of a letdown after how lovely I found Life After Life to be. Even though Life After Life dealt with the heaviness of WWII it had a magic, fantastical quality about it. This was all heaviness and hopelessness. Atkinson’s beautiful writing made up for a lot, but it’s not something I would recommend to a friend. -- source link
