I’ve seen many interpretations of this scene, but one can also look at the chains as the form of adoration, the way to make himself distinguished from the others at the final days of the expedition, the haunting parallel to Hickey’s little boat grandeur. Maybe a punishment by pain, maybe an award by the bright shiny things, maybe both. I like to think that both, the proclamation of self as the ruler of the remnants of the once great domain, the temporary emperor born out of scurvy, hypothermia and lead. The one in power or the one taking on the responsibility (or guilt) for the things done. The most disturbing moment, but beautiful too. Though, I imagine, the chains could have more of a practical side - the shine of the gold to attract those passing by like a signal rocket.
