I was unsure of the context in which Abu-Lughod describes Islam as a culture when she states her own beliefs (and not those of whom she critiques). Was she making the deliberate choice to not refer to Islam as a religion? To get a better idea of how the term “culture” operates, I looked up a New Yorker piece entitled “The Meaning of ‘Culture.’” It describes how culture often stands for a “process of individual enrichment,” “a group’s ‘particular way of life,’” or “as an activity” (museums, concerts, etc.). Perhaps Abu-Lughod is simply adopting the language of her adversaries as a way of taking them down. If “Pulp Nonfiction” describes Islam as an oppressive culture, Abu-Lughod demonstrates how such an understanding of any culture is nonsensical given the proper historical context.http://www.newyorker.com/books/joshua-rothman/meaning-cultureimage from here EC -- source link
