If you ever get the chance, I suggest visiting the shrine in Kamakura. Kamakura is said to be the capitol of the first Shogun era, the first Shogun being Minamoto Yoritomo. The red arch signifies the entrance to a Shinto shrine, on the outside are two guardian dogs. Sakura cherry blossom trees are on either side of the path. Inside, there are smaller shrines dedicated to the Shinto Gods. It is believed that stepping through the red archway signifies cleansing. You further cleanse with water, rinsing each hand. The departure from the shrine leaving through the red archway is considered your last cleansing. -- source link
