sleepy-belphie:obeyme-confessions:Full confession: “eh hello there. I just want to speak out because I’m tired. my friend got bullied because of “whitewashing” Diavolo in one of her artworks, but she didn’t do it. His skin colour was supposed to be lighter because of spotlights (he was a model in that picture), and what? everyone started to blame her, she TRIED to explain what’s what. now I see some artists posting black versions of characters and… I’m confused. why’s everyone happy with that? Isn’t it blackwashing of characters who are canonically white? I just can’t understand. this situation makes my friend feel depressed. It’s not fair.”(A/N: I’m watching notes. Anything that is deemed being shitty to the confessor will/can result in a block. Teach the person, but don’t send hate please) Can y’all not let POC have anything? Seriously, I’m asking. Why it is an issue for POC to want to put themselves in spaces they’re almost never canonically in? Do you know why whitewashing became such a big issue? Because it’s taking the small amount of representation POC have in media away from us. That is the heart of the issue. Media being taken from those who barely have representation in the first place. You don’t have to scroll more than once to come across white MC art if you go into the OM tag. It took me 3 days to find an artist who drew POC MC in their art. Do you see what I’m getting at here? You know what representation is typically shown in media for black people? Black people are ghetto, ratchet, need welfare, don’t pay child support, loud, obnoxious. We are “thugs”. We are “suspicious”. Most of the movies I watched growing up always had black people as the criminals, never as the hero. Only recently has media started making more POC positive productions and you know why? Because POC are the people producing them! This is escapism for us. For once we don’t want to be seen as the thugs and drug dealers. We want to see ourselves in characters we love because we barely get positive representation as it is! So if someone wants to draw black Lucifer, let them. If someone wants to make headcanons of Solomon being trans, let them. If someone wants to make headcanons of Asmo having ADHD, let them. If anyone wants to see a portion of themselves in a character they love because the representation they have in media is severely lacking or always negative, don’t take that from them. We are trying to put ourselves into a space that never wanted to accept us in the first place. Am I saying get rid of white media? No. Am I saying let POCs have the crumbs we can get by making content ourselves that we never get? Yes. It’s truly a privilege to be able to see someone like yourself in a show, game, movie, etc. Take a second to think about how lucky you are that you don’t have to make any edits to the things you love in order to see yourself represented in them. It’s tiring trying to explain why I deserve to be allowed to put myself and my blackness into a space that you never had to experience being shut out of in the first place. Let us have our space. -- source link
