a-little-bi-furious: cand86: I am so fucking done with biphobia in gay media. Just 1000% done. These are from the movie G.B.F., which got some flack on Tumblr at first for people assuming it was a straight take on the “gay best friend as accessory” phenomenon, rather than the actual mockery and critique of said concept that it was. But then that misinformation was corrected, people saw it (it’s on Netflix) … and yet I’ve only seen a handful of people talking about the actual egregious thing in the movie. (Not included in this gifset: Tanner’s father scoffing “He could be bi! Coastal!”, and a reprise during the credits rollover of “He could be bi. Bilingual!”, to which his wife replies “Bi is confusing. I’m glad he’s gay.”) It’s so completely jarring. You’re happily watching a movie, and then, bam! Out of the blue, it smacks you in the face. And the worst thing is that there’s no reason for it. I’ve gotten used to bi invisibility in my media- of just never seeing bi characters in most of what I read and watch. I’ve gotten used to bi erasure- of characters with an almost comical inability to say the B word as they sway from “straight” to “gay now”. I’ve put up with fictional worlds’ statistically improbable population of folks who eschew labels and lesbians who fall in love with men. I’ve even come to accept the tired stereotypes of duplicity and confusion in narratives where we are shown. But for fuck’s sake, this is so unnecessary. It’s a goddamned throwaway line, coming not from the bigoted villain or even some token clueless character, but from good characters the audience is supposed to like. It does nothing to advance the plot. It’s not even funny … unless the joke is supposed to be that bisexuals don’t exist. Ugh. I should know better, I know. Gay and lesbian movies can never be assumed to be safe places. Ah man I was really looking forward to this movie and, once again, a film about combatting stereotypes using bisexuality as a punchline. -- source link
