Today October 11th, formally known as #ChristopherColumbus Day aka Let’s Celebrate Another White Supremacist Day, is now known as #IndigenousPeoplesDay. This day has been rallied, advocated and fought for by Indigenous Americans & Caribbeans since the 1970’s. Everyday is Indigenous People’s Day but this is a win for us and as a #mixednative myself I am grateful. Some are up in arms about the “Christopher Columbus erasure” because it’s also erasing Italian history & heritage. I don’t know about you but I’ve never correlated CC with Italians or even seen Italians celebrate it as such until I was today years old, but maybe it’s just me. I can think of plenty of Italian’s that are that worth celebrating more tbh. Who? Here you go: #FrankSinatra - son of Italian immigrants, the first teen idol who helped shape American pop culture. His birthday is Dec. 12th. #MotherCabrini - was requested by Pope Leo XIII to come to the US to assist Italian immigrants, she built hospitals & orphanages & is now known as the patron saint of immigrants. Her birthday is July 15th. #EnricoFermi - Italian physicist & creator of the world’s first nuclear reactor & awarded the Nobel Prize in 1938. His birthday is Sep. 29th. #GeraldineFerraro - the first female & first Italian female vice presidential nominee representing a major party. Her birthday is Aug. 26th #DrAnthonyFauci - before Covid, he spearheaded the research on AIDS/HIV while working with the LGBTQ community. He’s advised every President since Reagan in the health sector. His birthday is Dec. 24th. And there’s a slew of others, but most importantly today is about honoring Indigenous people, communities and their continued contributions and being the true founders of America. The more you know.
