android-and-ale: woman-respecter:mswyrr:https://twitter.com/delaneykingrox/status/1090402436995473408 a great thing about people transitioning is it presents us with scenarios where we have the perfect control variable to undeniably reveal sexism in the workplace. I read about a trans man neuroscientist who was told he was “so much smarter than his sister” (his sister being his pre-transition self)and damn i knew the gaming industry was notoriously sexist (even more sexist than other stem fields, and that’s saying a lot) but seeing it laid out so clearly like this is so demoralizing. A story from 4 years ago that sounds like it should be from 40 years ago:A major AAA game developer located where I live advertised MY DREAM JOB. They wanted a historical consultant (in my specialty!) with a MA (hello!) and Creative Writing experience (I was fresh out of Clarion, the Sci-Fi writer’s bootcamp). Preference given to people who had some coding experience (yes!) and were already active in both gaming and geek culture (I’m literally a 2nd generation con kid!)Coder friends looked over my cover letter and resume. They agreed it looked like I was made for the job. The only way I wouldn’t get it was if I was up against a PhD who also published historical fantasy novels. I never heard back. The job stayed posted for 4 months. I reformatted and resubmitted my resume and cover letter two more times, and even set up an “informational interview” with HR, which is where you go to to tell them how much you love the company and to please keep you in mind in case of future openings you’d fit. Fast forward two years. I’m at a geek event and there’s a 23 year old white dude with a waxed mustache bragging about how he got this primo job in gaming two years ago, before he even graduated, without knowing a line of code - all because of cosplay! It’s a great story. He was lucky enough to have a drop dead gorgeous cosplay model girlfriend on his arm who caught this older guy’s eye. Turns out the guy was the hiring manager for a major AAA game developer. They got to talking, the kid said he was minoring in history at the moment, and the hiring manager stopped oogling his girlfriend long enough to say hey, I haven’t had any appropriate applications for this open job and HR is on my ass. I’ll leave it officially open, but I wanna hire you when you graduate! You look like my kind of man! I listened to him brag about how how The Universe wanted him to have this. After all, when he was hired he didn’t even have a degree yet and was only pursuing a minor in a tangentially related field. On paper he wasn’t remotely qualified, but the Hiring Manager saw his potential! On paper I was perfectly qualified, but I never had a chance. -- source link
