Zinaida Serebriakova was born on the 10th of December, 1884, in what is now the Ukraine. Upon finishing grammar school, she began studying at an art school founded by Princess M K Tenisheva. From a young age to strove to express the beauty of the world through her art, and was in her prime art-wise from 1914-1917 with her depictions of rural Russian life. She was a part of many art movements, such as symbolism, expressionism and art deco. Unfortunately, when the October Revolution broke out, her family lost everything and she had to switch from oil paints to other methods. In the autumn of 1924, she traveled to Paris upon receiving a commission there, but was unable to return to the Soviet Union after. She traveled after this, to places such as North Africa, where she was fascinated by it’s people and painted her fascinations as such. Zinaida was finally allowed back into the Soviet Union in the late 50′s and early 60′s. She exhibited her works in Moscow, Leningrad and Kiev in 1966, to great acclaim. She died in Paris on the 19th of September, 1967.The painting above is called Sleeping Nude, completed in 1941. -- source link
