My name is Yelitsa Jean-Charles and I am a Brown University Social Innovation Fellow. I am excited to share my project Healthy Roots! We will be launching our kickstarter this summer, but you can follow/share our facebook page to watch our progress and tell friends!: https://www.facebook.com/healthyrootsdolls Healthy Roots is a toy company out to inspire the next generation of young black girls to be empowered and confident. Use #healthyroots to support us! Healthy Roots is a doll/storybook that combats internalized racism and colorism among young black girls by educating them about their identity and culture. The dolls come in different skin tones and facial features that accurately represent women of the African Diaspora. The doll and books teach young black girls how to care for natural hair by showing them step by step natural hair styles that they learn through practicing on the doll. I love the community and bonding that has grown among black women through the natural hair community. I want that to continue on with our youth. I hope my dolls teach young black girls to be empowered and confident in their natural appearance regardless of skin color or hair texture. No one should be made to feel badly because of the kink of their curl or the melanin in their skin and we need more diverse representation in media and products to reflect that.
