If you live in the UK you might have seen the first part of a two part documentary on BBC2 “Absolutely Fashion: Inside British Vogue” looking behind the scenes at the most converted magazine in the world Vogue. It follows British Vogue and its editor Alexandra Shulman as we get an insider’s look at what really happens, not only at the offices but at fashion week and cover shoots. In the first part we saw Kate Moss shoot her 36th? 37th cover (she’s lost count herself) and we also got a look at Eddie Campbell’s cover shoot inspired by Instagram and social media. By the end of the program it got me questioning where is fashion and the future of Vogue and magazines actually going. Social media has exploded and over taken our lives within the past 5 years .Now days our generation are more concern about which snapchat filters make us look flawless and how many likes their Instagram photos have , how many followers we have on the social media and twitter and how we tweet our every thought for the world to see. With information at our figure tips and with a click of a button we can see and hear about the latest fashion trends even before they hit the pages of any fashion magazine. The first company that incorporate social media and was the game changer in the fashion world was Burberry. Creative director of the iconic and classic British brand, Christopher Bailey was the first designer at London fashion week to use twitter to tweet looks backstage just before they came onto the runway , making fashion lovers everywhere feel like they were ahead of the game even before the fashion experts and editors who were at the show. Later he did this again but this time with Snapchat and even snapping photos of moments leading up to the main show. After this fellow designer Karl Lagerfeld was reported that he created a snapchat account to recreate something similar. So where does this leave fashion magazines? Are they even relevant anymore. I know for me I haven’t picked up a copy of Vogue in a while and its not because I don’t like, the reason is is that I probably have already seen what’s going to be in it already from social media. Why would I pay £4.00 (will probably go up sooner or later) for something I’ve seen? Plus with the rise of social media stars , “instamodels” and so called “models” such a Kendall Jenner (this is one for another blog topic ) being cover stars which I personally think in my opinion that they don’t deserve to be on the cover of a magazine which is based on pure fashion, and to be totally honest I feel like they are putting models out their jobs, I feel like Vogue is becoming more commercialised and focused more on sales than the actually content. I know stars such as actresses and musicians are more recognisable, sell more copies and can relate to the general public more but what got me into Vogue in the first place was that High fashion and couture isn’t meant to be like that . Couture is selling a dream, a fantasy , something that not everyone can have or afford, something unique and one off and to me now I don’t see Vogue as that anymore which is disheartening and is making me question whether fashion is a career I want to go into anymore (never thought I would say that)I’m not saying the future of fashion is doomed, in fact I’m saying the opposite the rise of fashion and social media has probably done amazing things for the business job wise so to speak. Now are there are jobs which were not even around even 2years ago and will be forever expanding. I just think jobs within magazine printing will just decrease now as everything is either on a tablet, laptop, or mobile phone appI’m really interested to watch the second part of the documentary airing 15th September(on bbc2 at 9.00pm) to find out what the fashion editors/ designers and other influential people within fashion think about where fashion is going . All I can say to sum up everything is that I miss the old days of Vogue when it was so mainstream and models were actually on the covers , nowadays I don’t pick up or even contemplate buying vogue if a model is not on the cover.Really curious to think everyone’s views on this topic . -- source link
