cabbagingcove:Traditional tattoo designs on Ainu menThe Ainu were the last indigenous hunter-gatherer culture of Japan, with a civilization solidly established by 1200 C.E.. They were an amalgamation of several different earlier cultures, but were significantly different from the Yamato people that we think of as “Japanese” today. Their different language, culture, lifestyle, and fashion led to divisiveness when they interacted with the dominant ethnic groups, but by the Tokugawa period, they had exclusive rights over certain areas and animals for harvesting, and they had a significant trading relationship within other cultures living in Hokkaido.Cruise of the Revenue-Steamer Corwin. 1881. -- source link
