art-of-swords:Presentation Sword Dated: first half of the 17th century.Medium and technology: blade with diamond-shaped cross section; vessel and fittings made of gold, engraved, black enamelled, red lacquer; wood sheath with ray skin, large and small emeralds in cabochonMeasurements: overall length 101 cm; blade length 85 cm; weight 690g; sheath 88.5 cm; weight 165gThe sword has a golden, black enamelled hilt in the form of an eagle’s head and neck. The gold open beak shows a red throat, the feathers are made of emeralds around the eyes. The main crown is adorned with a gold-frame. Along the ricasso there’s an inscription with the names of Jesus and Mary.The short quillons of the sword are formed in the shape of an eagle’s talons with sharp claws, each holding emeralds. The choice of the eagle motif by the principal aims of the sword to the eagle as a symbol of the Roman emperor.The wooden scabbard has been covered with ray skin and was adorned with, with a green-golden girdle of emeralds. The eagle sword was made for a leading figure, probably designed for a jousting tournament.
