It was a country that prided itself on freedom and equality, then the nuclear fallout happened and proved to those that believed it that those values meant nothing to the ones in charge. The atomic bomb that destroyed whatever unity the country had landed on the shores of California, flattening most of the state to the ground and spreading radiation far and wide. Thousands died on impact, thousands more in the years that followed. The government, desperate to contain not only the destruction but the people suffering amongst it, started construction on what was then known as the ‘quarantine wall’.It was supposed to be temporary. A border cutting the country in half so the president could assess and help the people already affected without exposing those that hadn’t to the disarray. Years passed, and the only thing that changed was the extension of the wall. It got taller, longer, and then a second wall was built a mile into quarantined territory. It became clear to the people that they were being segregated. They were no longer citizens of a united states, just a bunch of forgotten victims not worth the effort.Any semblance of order dissipated not long after that realisation came. What was once half a country founded on democracy became an isolated nation of anarchism. People did what they wanted, nothing was legal and nothing was illegal. The law broke down and economy failed. Cities were knocked down for resources and a new city was built from the rubble. It was only when a small group of stupid scavengers ventured too close to the fallout zone that the real danger reared its head.Nuclear activity had created monsters from what had once been normal. Mutated humans and animals emerged from the dust searching for food. They found the scavengers, ate them alive, and carried on east. News travelled fast, and the Hub soon became the safety point for the population. Another wall was built around the city, a mile out from the outskirts. No monster has stepped foot here since, but it’s only a matter of time.”From the journal of Mateo Varela, a convict of the New State. Keep reading -- source link
