germanaustriannoblesandroyals:Minor Nobles (09/?): Maria Anna “Nannerl” MozartMaria Anna, nicknamed Nannerl, was born as the fourth of seven children and third of four daughters to Leopold Mozart and his wife Anna Maria Pertl. Only Nannerl and her famous younger brother Wolfgang Amadeus survived into childhood.Nannerl was the inspiration that got Amadeus into music since he just wanted to be like her as a child. In fact, Maria Anna is regarded as just as musically talented as him and received top-billing in their early days when she toured through the European courts with him and their parents. Unfortunately none of her compositions survived unlike the letters of her brother who praised them. Their father however never mentions them. He also supported Amadeus more once Nannerl hit a marriagable age since he rather saw her future as traditional wife instead of a musician.Nannerl originally fell in love with Franz d'Ippold, a captain and private tutor, but was forced by her father to turn down his marriage proposal. Wolfgang attempted unsuccessfully to convince his sister to stand up to their father.Instead she married Johann Baptist Franz, Imperial Baron (von) Berchtold zu Sonnenburg on August 23rd, 1783. He had been widowed twice before and already had five children. She raised her stepchildren and also bore three of her own: Leopold, Jeanette and Maria Babette. When Leopold was born at her family’s home in Salzburg, it was decided that he was to stay with his maternal grandfather. The exact reasons therefor are unknown. Some say it was Nannerl’s health, some say Leopold’s, some suggest Nannerl had enough to do with her stepchildren and then again others relate Leopold growing up at his grandfather’s as a wish of the grandfather so he could produce another musical talent like Wolfgang (and Nannerl). If it was truly the latter, it showed once again how obedient Nannerl was to her father’s wishes. When her husband died in 1801, Nannerl returned to Salzburg with her surviving children and step-children. From now on, she taught piano for which she was highly valued by her students. Overall, Maria Anna was a frugal person which allowed her to stay afloat without remarrying again. In 1825, Maria Anna became blind and her health in general declined in her last years. In 1829, she was described by Mary Novello as blind, languid, exhausted, feeble and nearly speechless as well as lonely. She died on October 29th the same year at the age of 78. Today, Maria Anna is buried at St Peter’s Cemetery in Salzburg.// Marie Féret as Nannerl Mozart in Nannerl, la soeur de Mozart aka Mozart’s Sister (2010)____________________________________________________________Requested by anonymous -- source link
