Both of these are examples of Japanese religious art. They are also examples of Japanese modern art called Nihonga. The first picture is the Mother of God (1905). The artist is unknown. It is an example of Nihonga art (neotraditional Japanese painting ) The Compassionate Kannon (Guanyin/Avalokitasvara) (1876) by Kanō Hōgai shows a similar scene. It is also example of Nihonga. Hōgai’s works reflect the deep traditions of the school, but also at times show hints of experimentation with Western methods and styles. Also one can note the similarity in character of the women and child in both pictures. These styles date back much earlier Japanese ascetic traditions. Perhaps Kannon in this painting looks more male than female. Kannon is known as both. -- source link
