Verkhoturye (Siberia, 17th century).Verkhoturye was founded in 1598 by Vasily Golovin and Ivan Voyeykov. It was situated on the old Mansi settlement of Neromkar, in themiddle Ural Mountains and on the left bank of the Tura River. TheUral Mountains were lower at the site of the town, forming a natural“gateway to Siberia”. Becase of this, Verkhoturye was the end ofthe Babinsky Road, which was pioneered by Artemy Babinov in 1597 andwas the main road into Siberia until around 1763 . -- source link
