Upcoming Exhibition from Nigerian Artist Victor Ekpuk Will Be His First in Nigeria in Over 10 Years.Victor Ekpuk is aNigerian-born and raised artist currently based in Washington, DC. He is renowned for hisglyph-like paintings and drawings that are inspired primarily by the aestheticphilosophies of indigenous Nsibidi art forms and graphic symbols from diversecultures. Ekpuk reimagines these symbols to form a personal style of markmaking that results in the interplay of art and writing. His work frequentlyexplores the human condition, drawing upon a wide spectrum of meaning that isrooted in African and global contemporary art discourses.Combining elements of symbolism, neo-expressionism and abstract art that heavily reference Nsibidi culture, with a hint of Basquiat, Ekpuk’s works have beenfeatured at the 12th Havana Biennial, Dakar Biennial, Hood Museum, FowlerMuseum, Museum of Art and Design, Newark Museum, The World Bank, SmithsonianInstitution National Museum of African Art, New Museum of Contemporary Art, andthe 1st Johannesburg Biennial. Nsibidi is an ancient form of sacred communication among the male secret societies of the Ibibio, Efik, Ejagham and Igbo peoples of southeastern Nigeria, knowledge of which he acquired from memory of observations stemming from his childhood, and from documented anthropological archives.Ekpuk recently concluded his artist-in-residence program with Arthouse Foundation, aLagos based non-profit art organization and will soon have his creations hosted in the city. The works realized from histime as an artist-in-residence will be shown in his first solo exhibition inNigeria in over a decade, opening 9-30th April-2016, at the RenaultShowroom on Akin Adesola street in Victoria Island, Lagos.
