Oil wells outside of Baku, Azerbaijan, in 1890. Seeping oil deposits in this part of the world have been known at least since late antiquity. Marco Polo mentioned them in his travel accounts. Modern-day Azerbaijan was one of the earliest sites of major oil production in the 19th century, predating the major finds of oil in Texas by decades. -- source link
