For the 4th of July, here are some of my favorite American books plus 2 I plan to read soon. I’m lucky enough to teach American literature and a lot of the books I would have liked to include here (Adichie, Baldwin, Cisneros, Morrison) live in my classroom in the hopes that they’ll end up in a student’s hands. Every year teaching AmLit feels like a tremendous responsibility. Teachers selecting books for this class, literally craft the story of America for our students. I want my students to see the range of the American idea from Native American folktales to John Winthrop’s “City on a Hill” to Toni Morrison’s depiction on an America haunted by the ghost of slavery. And I want them to discover as many perspectives as possible well beyond this stack I’ve gathered. I don’t think I’ve gotten it right yet, but every year I push myself to do a little more and be a little better. So if you have any authors or books you think are essential puzzle pieces in constructing a picture of America, please do share them with me and help me bring the best possible books into my classroom. #AmericanLiterature #AmericanAuthors #BookStack #Bookstagram #IGReads #EnglishTeacher #SummerReading #FictionMatters -- source link
