Walters Art Museum. From the Walters:Fish plates first appeared in Athens during the 5th century and later became a typical product of South Italian workshops. While the fish on South Italian plates are normally oriented with their lower body towards the center, on Athenian examples, the bellies of the fish are turned towards the rim of the plate. These plates were used to serve fish, and the depression in the center would hold the sauce. Depicted here are a mullet, a flatfish, a wrasse, and two mussels. -- source link
