12 Times Feminism Won Twitter In 2014“As the year comes to a close, we take a look at those hashtags and moments that have certainly transformed or “won” Twitter, and that stand to catapult men and women into new and hopefully game-changing conversations in 2015.”See the full list hereHey bloggers / writers, can we all agree to retire “won” as a go-to phrase for headlines, as in “How feminism won in 2014,” “How feminism won pop”, “How feminism won the internet,” etc. A few examples why:1. Charlie Sheen. We should have retired “won” with “#winning”2. Winning 2014. As long as sexual assault and violence against women are epidemic, and companies make billions selling both of those things to us as mainstream entertainment and pornography, feminism hasn’t “won” a year. We kicked ass, but don’t hang that “Mission Accomplished” banner up yet.3. Winning pop. It is a great thing that Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj, three of the biggest names in music, are all strong women and feminist-identified. No question there. But in a year when rape/score culture anthems Blurred Lines and Get Lucky were two of the biggest songs of the year, feminism didn’t “win” pop.4. Winning the internet. Yes feminists and online feminism were a huge movement in 2014 - I’m not downplaying our work or our many successes. But does anyone remember GamerGate? Women are having to run for their lives and go offline for being feminists, and these are feminists who are simply asking for better representation in games, not for the global chemical castration of men. The empire struck back in 2014 so I’m not putting that one in the “win” column either. The good news: we are making amazing progress, and the movement is growing in leaps and bounds. tumblr is a perfect example of how feminist consciousness is spreading like wildfire amongst millennials worldwide. I’m Gen X, I don’t know that I heard the word feminism in high school in the 80’s, nobody used the word. Now feminist posts have millions of notes.I end this year proud and happy about feminism 2014, and optimistic about 2015. I’m just saving the “We won” cake for later. -- source link
