The Door to HellMany faiths feature Hell in their mythology, a fiery place beneath the Earth where mortals go to be tortured and punished after death. Some of them believe that Hell can be accessed directly from Earth’s surface, and so many sites across the world that are curious and terrifying in their geology or appearance that they have been dubbed ‘gates of hell’. The Door to Hell is one such gate. Constantly burning in the middle of the desert in northern Turkmenistan, this natural gas crater near Derweze Village stays true to its local name, no doubt sparking belief that it leads to the fiery depths of Hell. It is one of the largest gas reserves in the world. After collapsing at the hand of Soviet engineers drilling into its core in 1971, the drilling engineers ignited the methane trapped in the crater, preventing the toxic gas from spreading. Estimating it would only burn for a few weeks, the fire and boiling mud have remained alight for more than four decades.AshImage credit: https://flic.kr/p/axYUrS, Tormod SandtorvSource credit: http://bit.ly/1tU22jYSource credit: http://bit.ly/1mUuJKZ -- source link
