1.1 Exercise - Dot-Dot-Dot-Line BTW yes, this is just an addition to the previous Dot-Dot-Line exercise I’ve been writing before (see list of exercises). So if you don’t want to read the complete text just skip to the my humble experience part for new information. Use as: can be both, warm-up and exercise Purposes: - loosening the shoulder and brain ;) - learning to connect spots on a drawing fluently (any length)- learning to use different grip variations (all art teacher tutorials urge you to draw with the overhand grip for fluent lines without interruptions) How to: there are basically two steps that need to be repeated until your paper is too full or you feel ready draw three or more dots anywhere on the page, with random distancetry to connect the dots with a fluent line without lifting the pencil (fluent movement)Tips:- if the dots are close, use the well known tripod (traditional) grip or whatever suits you => you will draw out of you wrist and fingers mostly- if the dots are wider appart, use the overhand grip (google overhand grip drawing ;)) => you will draw with your shoulder and elbow- do the lines in both directions (you will need to be able to do this later!)- don’t draw the line right away, but do the “over-shadowing“ motion with the pencil from one to the other dot (like drawing the line, but the pencil is not quite touching the paper) and when the motion seems to settle down in you head, then draw the line in one flued motionMy humble experience so far: I am fairly bad with connecting spots with fluent lines (can be seen in the green lines), as I only draw with small sketching lines until they blend into one another and look like a single line. This technique takes time and never quite looks like a fluent line. So I am really hoping that this workout will improve my abilites. I think this is perfect as a warm-up as you just loosen your muscles and focus on connecting dots with one try, without stressing yourself with the outcome. So the concentrations goes from 0 to 100 in a few seconds and I think concentration is a must have for good drawing. I was quite bad with this exercise when only two dots were involved, now that there are more I feel like I’m not able to control the pen at all. In most of the cases my lines did not hit all the dots and were weirdly bent :(I’ll post an updated picture when I see a big improvement (don’t expect it too soon, more like a few months or years hahaha). Conclusion:good and easy warm-up, but will not make an artist out of you overnight ;)repetiotion repetition repetition! -- source link
