Walking over AshThese brilliantly colored layers are found in Oregon’s John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The alternating colors are created by alternating patterns of soils and volcanic ashes. The sediments were deposited in this area as the Cascade volcanoes grew in Central Oregon and the surrounding areas pulled apart. A soil would form in the area as sediments flowed in, then that soil would be rapidly buried by volcanic ash. These layers today hold a great number of mammalian fossils – trapped and preserved in this area by the volcanic eruptions.
