23. The Fade/ Void/ BeyondOk I stretched this a bit, if you don’t snitch I won’t either! :)It was already late, but Drifa wanted to end her research first before retreating for the night.“Alistair? Can I ask you something?”“You can even ask me to catch the sun, and I would try!” Alistair answered with a big grin and kissed Drifa’s cheek softly. Drifa instantly blushed at the mere sound of his words.“Ugh, that is too much tooth-rotting sweetness for me; I need to take my leave!” Dorian announced while leaving the Library. Alistair’s grin only got bigger; now that he was alone with her, he could at least start an attempt to make her stop working. He knew that it was all necessary, but sometimes she tended to exaggerate. When Drifa was certain that Dorian couldn’t hear her any longer, she started talking: “We talked a few days ago about ‘us’, and I cannot understand why you still love me. I am everything you should fear. You know what I can do in our dreams; you know about my unknown magic, I can kill in the blink of an eye; now you finally saw what I am when we were trapped in the fade. So how can you still love me?” Drifa looked at Alistair, her eyes slowly filling with tears.Alistair needed a few seconds to catch himself, he had felt that such a question might come up, but he wasn’t ready for it now at this specific moment. He flexed his shoulders, not because he wanted to show off but just to do something instead of being motionless for too long that Drifa could find out that he was at a loss for words. He needed to say something, quickly!Alistair leaned forward and took Drifa’s hands in his. His eyes were joyful as he said: “ As long as you’re not an archdemon, I am fine! That beast was a pain!”The moment Alistair said it, he already regretted it. He had trained himself too long to dodge everything with humour. Alistair knew that Drifa was serious, she never asked unnecessary questions, and she would never bother others if needed. He felt like an idiot.“I am sorry, I am an idiot! let me try again!”Alistair tucked at Drifa’s arms now to gesture to her to come closer to him. When she stood up, he placed one arm around her waist and pulled her into his lap.“You always told me what you are; I knew it from the start. I didn’t run then. So there is no reason for me to start running now”, Alistair cradled Drifa in his arms, “And for someone that claims to be a dangerous abomination, you’re very nice and beautiful!”Drifa sighed, she had hoped for a more profound answer, but she could accept it, for now. -- source link
