Bi Week: Sally RideHappy Bisexual Awareness week! Here’s Sally Ride, the first US woman in space. Sally was chosen for the space flight because of her expertise with the Challenger shuttle’s robotic arm which lifted satellites into orbit. She described her experience as “the most fun I’ll ever have in my life”. Sally was very private about her sexuality during her life, but we now know that as well as a marriage to fellow astronaut Stephen Hawley, she had a 27-year relationship with science educator Tam O’Shaughnessy, which lasted until Sally’s death in 2012. Sally came out publicly for the first time in her obituary. In 2013, she was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama, which Tam accepted on her behalf.
