Sienne i was supposed to post smth for your birthday, but here i am almost a month later. happy super belated birthday love !! p.s. ik today isn’t even your monthly birthdate but idk if you’ll be online tomorrow so i’m posting this today <3 You walk out of the lawn after a small excuse, the cool wind of the night and the fairy lights decorating the fence your only companion. In contrary to the expectations you had of your high school reunion, you had a fairly good time, the warmth of nostalgia and the ringing of laughter of your classmates still clinging on to you; mind you, the same classmates you don’t even recall talking more than a couple of words to back in high school.Time sure did work its charm.“(name)?”Your pause, demeanour faltering when you match the voice to the person.“Hyunjin.”With a slight smile-for old times’ sake, you had exchanged pleasantries with him, the small talk soon growing into a husk of the friendship you had shared, rekindling a flame from a spark that never left you. Every single moment you spent with him deepened that thrum of pain which had been constant ever since you left. High school was a long time ago. It was unfair how time did nothing to lessen your feelings for Hwang Hyunjin.He flashes you a boyish grin after catching up with you, panting as if had run all the way here. You control the urge to push away the strands of permed hair falling over his eyes.“I’ll drop you.” he says, swinging his car’s keys right before your eyes as if to hypnotize you before dropping it. “That is, if you don’t mind a borrowed hunchback with cat scratches in the backseat” he adds with a sigh as he bends down to pick his keys up.The hunchback with cat scratches in the backseat (most probably a courtesy of his roommate’s affection for felines) was the least of your concerns. The threat of your well-guarded emotions for your best friend from once upon a time getting exposed, however, was definitely a concern.“It’s okay, I-I’ve got to go the other way, anyways.”His expression falls for a few before he meets your gaze, voice quieter than before, “It took me two whole years to meet you again after the last time you said that.”The night’s wind stills, your guard cracking by the edges. A lot of words come to the tip of your tongue but not one is supported by your voice.“I never really explained myself, did I?” You never did. You never did tell him how afraid you were of what you felt. You never did tell him why you cut your hour-long conversations to mere minutes. You never did tell him about the admission you had received and accepted for a college situated outside of your little town. You never did tell him why you slowly removed yourself from his life, not even after everything was over, your heart still under lock and key.“And I never asked.” He says softly, his fingers interlacing yours.“If I hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t have been able to leave you behind.” Because I love you, damn it.“You didn’t have to.” Hyunjin shakes his head, chuckling drily, “I loved you, and I still do.” and he wondered if things would’ve been different had he said it earlier, instead of him being left behind in the dust with only traces of you. He swallows, eyes darting from yours to the hand he held, “I-I couldn’t even bring myself to hate you, you know?”Because that’s the way love works. You pull him into a hug, his arms snaking around your waist while yours his neck.“I love you too.” You mumble, your heart thumping wildly. The confession was oddly reliving, the beginning of a something new.Maybe you can start afresh. Maybe you can wear your heart on your sleeve.
