Growth of Flexible and Open Concepts of Sexual and Gender Identity, as seen through Google TrendsA key focus of feminism has always been to examine and challenge sexual and gender roles and expectations. This led to an examination and questioning of gender and identity itself. After the U.S, feminist explosion and gay rights movement in the 60’s, kids who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s were exposed to WAY more feminist-positive and gay-positive information and media than existed previously. This led my generation to be progressive and active on feminist and GLTBQ issues (thanks, 2nd Gen. Feminists!). 90’s kids and millennials are the children of those feminism-influenced parents: the 2nd generation in the U.S. since 2nd Wave Feminism, which was an enormous cultural shift in America. Their concepts of gender roles are much more flexible and open, as you can see pretty easily on Tumblr through the rainbow of identities.Using Google Trend, we can see the rise in interest in non-traditional sexual and gender identities over the last decade. I did “pansexual” and “gender fluid” as sample searches.Pansexual on Google TrendsGender Fluid on Google Trends Try your own search -- source link
