I think the elves of Doriath and Sirion should have known better before denying the Fëanorians the Silmarils. It was pretty foolish of them not to have taken the historical precedent set at Alqualondë into account. The Teleri didn’t even have a Silmaril and the Fëanorians slaughtered them. The Doriathrim had one, ‘unjustly’ from some perspectives. It was pretty ignorant of them not to realize that they were seriously endangering themselves by keeping the Silmaril back. -- source link
