General Montgomery Meigs — Quartermaster of the Union Army.In 1864 General Meigs’ son was killed in action during the American Civil War. He ordered his sons’ remains to be buried at the doorstep of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s manor, known as the Arlington House. The manor had been acquired by the government by tax auction and converted into a training camp. As chief quartermaster, Meigs ordered as many deceased Union soliders be buried around the Arlington House as possible. A tradition was started, and the Arlington House is now better known as Arlington National Cemetary. -- source link
