An anachronistic depiction of the Battle of Yarmouk. The battle occurred in the year 636, and is considered the decisive battle in the war between the Byzantine Empire and Muslim forces. At Yarmouk, the Byzantine emperor Heraclius overcommitted his troops in an effort to destroy the Muslim army; his gamble failed and the outnumbered Muslim forces were able to win. This victory allowed the Muslims to conquer much of the Levant and northern Africa. This depiction, created in the early 1300s, shows the Byzantines in heavy armor reminiscent of the Crusades; they would not have dressed this way at all. This choice of depiction shows the degree to which later medieval Europeans associated themselves with the Christian Byzantines.{WHF} {HTE} {Medium} -- source link
