The world is full of beauty waiting for you to explore it. I promised I would talk a little bit about how I travel affordably, so here we go:I am a uni student working part time in a call centre. And I have a passion for travel. I live in an appartment in Vienna with my flatmate and we share the rent, my part is about 380 euros per month plus electricity. I don’t have a very luxurious lifestyle, certainly not when I travel. I don’t buy too many clothes or make up or shoes or anything else, most of my money goes on travel, really. So let’s break this down: TRANSPORT:Flights:My absolute favourite for flights is skyscanner.comI live in Vienna and there’s two cheap airports not too far from here: Bratislava and Budapest. Ryanair flies from there which makes it extremely cheap to fly. I’m talking 30 euros return to Copenhagen or London. So look for flights from other airports too, not just your hometown airport. Also, skyscanner tells you when it is cheap to fly, which is amazing. If you chose the option to search for the cheapest month, the website will give you a calendar with the flight prices and highlight the cheapest one. I truly love and recommend this website highly.Travelling by car:I mostly use blablacar (or oszkar for hungarian trips). That is an app and website on which people, who are driving to a certain city can offer a spot in their car and take you with them. I’ve used it a ton and it works perfectly. I regularly go to Budapest from Vienna for as little as 10-15 euros (the train would cost me 30 at least!) Another option, of course, is hitchhiking. I do this too, though not so regularly because I am often pressed for time and hitchhiking can take A LOT of time. Check hitchwiki for details on where to hitch from. They have extensive infos on where to hitch from in each city. Generally, it’s best to start on a petrol station or by a highway on the correct end of your starting city so if I want to go to Budapest from Vienna, I’ll look for a ride at the eastern end of Vienna, because BP is east from Vienna. ACCOMMODATION:Hostels:No shit, Sherlock. Of course hostels are a cheap way to stay in the city of your choice. I generally just google them or I check on hostelworld.comAirbnb:This has worked fantastically for me. Airbnb is a website where people can rent a room in their appartment or the whole appartment. I personally prefer to stay in a room if I’m by myself and a whole appartment if I’m with my boyfriend. You can find fantastic rooms for as little as 15 euros per night (or lower!) but it of course depends on the city you’re visiting.Couchsurfing:I don’t do this as much as I used to but I definitely use it occasionally. Couchsurfing is a website which lets people share their appartments or rooms with other members of Couchsurfing. For free! You have to create a profile, fill it out, put some time into it, you can upload pictures and even offer your own couch. It’s a bit tough when you start out because you have to write a personal message to each host and especially in popular cities like Paris or Barcelona, these hosts receive A TON of messages each day, so you’ll really have to put a lot of effort into these couch requests. It helps if you’ve hosted people before and already have a couple of reviews. Hosts are letting strangers stay at their house and they obviously want to make sure that these people aren’t creeps. All in all this website is fantastic. It’s become very crowded lately and there’s a lot of people who use it as a website for free accommodation, nothing more, which it’s not meant to be. It’s meant to be a place where you can meet people, learn from them, live with them for a little while and emerge yourself in the city like a real local. These are basically the main ways in which I travel. I hardly ever stay in a hotel and I think the only time I haven’t booked via skyscanner and flown with a cheap ass airline was when work payed for my flights :’) I will talk about my hitchhiking and couchsurfing experiences more later on, since these are often considered “extreme” methods of travel. And I gotta admit, I did have some pretty funny memories of those things. Hope you’re having a great Sunday night, I’m gonna head off to bed. -- source link
