Crossing Brooklyn is open! Featuring over 100 works by a multigenerational group of thirty-five Brooklyn-based artists/collectives, the exhibition focuses on a single impulse: artistic practices that are expansive and engaged with the world. This type of practice appeared frequently in the 100+ studio visits we made, encompassing a spectrum of possibilities. Crossing Brooklyn presents that spectrum, offering a variety of works that might encourage interaction and exchange with you, the visitor, even as they function as compelling, frequently poetic aesthetic objects.Many of the artists in Crossing Brooklyn seem inspired by a desire to connect, to look outside the self in meaningful, tangible ways. Much of the work on view is imbued with an earnestness or sincerity—even a hint of idealism. Creating opportunities for contemplation and face-to-face engagement, these artists privilege direct experience and slow, unscripted interactions. Perhaps shaped in part by waves of grassroots action worldwide, they believe that personal behavior and agency matter.
