Looking for a creative wedding favor? How about a faience dung beetle! Dung beetles, or scarabs, were thought to be miraculous in Ancient Egypt because their young would suddenly emerge from balls of dung they rolled across the desert. They were also associated with the god Kheper, a solar deity understood to roll the sundisk across the sky. This large scarab is one of 56 known that lists the titles of King Amunhotep III, the boundaries of his empire, and the titles and lineage of his Queen, Tiye. The inscription is what leads scholars to call them “marriage scarabs.”Posted by Elizabeth Treptow -- source link
