ryns-ramblings:POSEY DU BLYS. MAIN CHARACTER OF THE NOVEL COURT CHESS: A MODERN WOMAN’S GUIDE TO COURTLY INTRIGUE // CISGENDER WOMAN // 19 // BISEXUAL A description of Posey du Blys, who goes solely by her surname Blys:It’s always been difficult to describe myself in any other terms other than being compared to my stepsister or my mother, but I shall do my best for your sake. I have the coloring of a pig slowly dying of frostbite in the cold–pale and pink and red, with my hair being more a shade of orange than the darkened auburn or fiery red of others with my type of hair. It hasn’t even the slightest bit of curl and tends to wilt more than anything when trying to put a curl into it. My face is all sharp edges and nothing soft about it, while my body is not soft but large, like an abandoned tree stump in shape. All in all, I am not much to look at, which would suit me just fine if my future wasn’t riding on some rich man deciding I was worthy of marriage within the next year. Honestly, I ought to just prepare myself for employment now.Blys is the stepdaughter of a wealthy merchant who became ill with an unknown disease, with the money he had slowly whittling away. She shares the slowly decaying manor she lives in with her stepmother, the beautifully fading socialite with a cruel streak named Winifred Hastings, and a stepsister, beautiful beyond measure but not terribly intelligent, named Jane Hastings. As she grew older, Blys used her intelligence to continue some of her father’s business affairs while slowly growing colder and more bitter under the cruelty of her mother and the frustration of her circumstances. Living in genteel poverty, Blys and Jane take care of most of the chores and are truly the only bright spot in the other’s life. Despite the situation, things are going well until finally her father’s health makes a turn for the worse and they are forced to call on Earl Ormund, the uncle of Jane and her father’s former brother-in-law, to take care of the family’s affairs and let Jane go to court. Blys assumes she will be tasked to stay and nurse her stepfather, as the earl is providing Jane’s dowry, but at the request of her father Blys will spend one year in court and, should she fail in gaining a marriage despite her lack of dowry, she will be turned over to destitution.Blys is well aware this is a miracle she shall not be able to wish into existence, so while at court is hoping to apply for possible posts as a governess. What she did not expect, however, was to have to save her stepsister. The king, who had executed his third wife on dubious charges of a divorce, is on the hunt for his fourth wife and seems to have decided upon Jane as a possible matrimonial choice. The earl is pleased, Jane is unsure of what to do, and Blys is determined to have the king turn his murderous gaze away from her sister through hook or crook, if she must. From giving charming ladies makeovers to capture the king’s interest, faking she is one of the members of the ton jealous of Jane, to even spying on the earl to ensure that he isn’t moving Jane more towards the king than she is already being pushed, Blys will stop at nothing to ensure her sister’s safety. It is a blessing that her lack of looks keep her from attracting the attention of most people—except for Ajmal Shirazi, the young and handsome ambassador, who seems to see through her fictitious actions and occasionally helps her. But since she does not know his motivations in aiding her, she cannot trust him…despite wanting to do so.
