The winner of 2016: Niè Yinniáng If I had to choose one of my list-toppers, of any medium, as an overall favourite thing of 2016, it would be Hou’s The Assassin (it debuted elsewhere in 2015 but was released in the UK this year). I’ve watched it four times already (twice in the cinema, twice at home) and will probably watch it again soon. A slow, painterly, unapologetically opaque, subtly-but-densely layered film of utterly intoxicating beauty. The locations/sets, costumes, steadicam work, the evocative and exquisitely detailed imagery… a feast for the senses. -- source link
