emperor-olsen:The last major stop in South Dakota was at the famous Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South and west of Rapids City. The site of the mammoth remains was discovered by accident when a subdivision was being built in the area and a hill was being removed. The site was discovered to be the remains of an ancient sinkhole and in the layers of sediment were the remains of mammoth fossils and other fauna. The site is especially cool to visit and it gives you a chance to see a working fossil dig site. -- source link
