not-a-coral-snake: Finally got around to taking some photos of the map of Vere and Akielos I drew last spring! I knew from the start that I wanted to go ahead and add some additional geographical features, since the map in the books seems to only show the largest/most important forests and mountain ranges. It was really fun deciding what the geography would look like. I ended up drawing inspiration from the real-world landscapes of France and Greece. Even though all forts on the map in the book are represented with the same icon, Damen’s descriptions from the book are detailed enough to give a sense of differences and similarities in age, upkeep, and style among the border fortresses. So in making this map, I wanted to use different icons for each fort to reflect those details. Aquitart is the smallest, and also the oldest, built in a different architectural style than the other three. Ravenel is the largest, similar in style to Fortaine and Marlas but with a different layout. Damen describes jarring similarity between Marlas and Fortaine, so on the map Marlas is Fortaine’s twin with the Veretian embellishments stripped away.I also wanted to reflect the different cultures and aesthetic values of the countries on the map, and ended up using lettering styles to reflect those differences. -- source link
