On June 19th 1865, Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had ended, and that the enslaved were now free. Juneteenth is a day to honor those who suffered and those who still suffer from the legacy of slavery, to celebrate the event of emancipation, and to reflect on the work still to be done to establish unity, equality and justice in the United States - and throughout the world. -- source link
