The folio shows verses from Surat al-Nabiya (The Prophets) in Kufic script, the ideal script style for copying Qur’ans in the Early Islamic Period. The Kufic style originates from the city of Kufa (present day Al-Kufah, Iraq). The ink is brownish black and made from metal tannates. This folio includes the vowel and verse markings indicating vocalizing sounds. The Qur’an was first revealed orally and not written down until after the death of Prophet Muhammad. Hence, early Qur'an codices did not have vowel markings. It served as a visual reminder to those who had already memorized it by heart.Posted by Zinia Rahman -- source link
