Painting commissioned by the Austin, TX chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators. Gouache and Watercolor. Now a few words on gouache:Acrylic Matte Medium was made to make acrylic colors more matte instead of glossy as well as to add volume to paints without sacrificing their color and intensity. It can also be used with gouache, as it has the added benefit of making gouache PERMANENT.Gouache in its unadulterated state is NOT permanent. It blends and lifts and is easy to alter which is why advertising artists and illustrators have been using it for decades (and it’s matte, so it photographs VERY easily). But sometimes I want my gouache a little more permanent without it blurring and lifting as it is prone to doing.Because Acrylic Matte Medium is a permanent binder, adding a drop to some distilled water to use as your mixing water for diluting your gouache will make your paint permanent. The more you add, the more permanent your gouache, though too much will lighten your paint a shade, so you have to use it sparingly. A little drop goes a long way!Holbein makes an acrylic gouache which is, essentially, the same thing: a semi-permanent gouache that can be layered without fear of lifting or striking through as well as highly flexible without cracking (which gouache is also prone to doing and which acrylic matte medium also prevents). However, there are times I want my gouache permanent and times I want to be able to blend. So on my palette, I keep a well of plain distilled water and a separate well of distilled water with a drop of acrylic matte medium blended in. I mix in some of my gouache to both wells and with a clean brush, dip into the needed well before dipping into the paint and applying to paper. I rinse and switch between the two as the painting demands.Because Acrylic Matte Medium is quite viscous, I keep it in an applicator tube (handy little things for adding various mediums!) and only apply as needed. Gouache with acrylic matte medium added CAN NOT BE REWET. So only use as needed or you will be wasting a lot of paint! -- source link
