Born in Brooklyn and based in the Bronx, Daze’s renderings of Coney Island pulse with a dynamic sense of reinvention, suggestive of the transformative nature of possibility that underlies both individual subjects and their surroundings in the graffiti artist’s representations of America’s Playground. In Coney Island Pier, a group of teenagers stand on the edge of a wooden dock mesmerized by a soaring cruciform-shaped diver. Dusted with a glimmer of white spray paint, the soaring figure intersects the horizon line, as though he could be leaping skyward instead of into the ocean. The teen’s moving body enacts the notion of transition, appearing to magically come into being from childhood to adulthood. Aware of the amorphous concept of identity and the diversity of worlds we inhabit, Daze explained that “young people are undergoing states of perpetual change, as is Coney Island itself.” The painting conveys the fearless and naive exuberance of youth, evoking the universal longing to fly while signifying the uninhibited sense of adventure experienced by generations at the Brooklyn beach town of urban escape and wonder.Posted by Alison Karasyk Chris Ellis aka Daze (American, born 1962).
