FrankStella made Coney Island in 1958, theyear that the artist graduated from Princeton University and moved to New YorkCity. Painted by Stella at the ripe age of twenty-two, the artwork is part of aseries of abstract paintings in which the artist experimented withmonochromatic forms of box-like shapes and lines rendered with an integral andinviting sense of imperfection. The composition of primary colors includes twenty-ninered and yellow horizontal stripes intersected by a blue rectangle at center,combining to conjure a playful version of the American flag. The artist’ssubstitution of white stripes with yellow, focal placement of the bluerectangle and the irregularity of each gestural line echoes Coney Island’spresence within the nation at large.
