1) I didn’t say Shakespeare was sexist. My whole argument was that we can’t properly judge what Shakespeare’s attitude towards women was based on his writing because his characters’ (various) views don’t necessarily reflect his personal beliefs.2) the general gist of my argument was that Shakespeare usually writes good female characters and at times seems critical of patriarchal culture - again, this is hardly calling him sexist.3) I was also careful to highlight the historical context - I mentioned he was writing under Elizabeth and James and clearly stated that feminism did not exist in the 16th and 17th centuries, and that it would be anachronistic to call him a feminist - so I don’t understand why you’d think I’m surprised by the fact that some of his characters express sexist views.4) I was going to finish this with something encouraging, like ‘hey, you tried’, but your blathering message shows you clearly didn’t try and that you lack basic reading comprehension skills. I must however admire the lengths you went to in creating a blog specifically for sending angry messages to strangers on the Internet. Congratulations on your life. -- source link
