She worked for the NationalAssociation for the Advancement of Colored People as its first female attorney.Later, she became the first African-American ever to argue a case before the USSupreme Court.She wonnine of the ten cases she argued in front of the Supreme Court, with the tentheventually overturned in her favour. In this way she helped advance the civilrights of African Americans throughout the country, helping to desegregateschools or public transport in the South.
