The Prefect’s House, Vindolanda Roman Fort, Northumberland, 29.4.18This was a substantial courtyard-type residence that housed the commanding officer of the Fourth Cohort of Gauls. The commander would have maintained a large household with a retinue of servants and this building would host a large number of guests. Four large altars were in the courtyard dedicated to Jupiter and ‘the Genius of the Residence’. During the 5th century when the building was in ruins, a small Christian Church was erected in the former courtyard space. -- source link
