tenlittlebullets:negativecos:terrasigillata:o-eheu:The conjugations of yolo. It had to be done.let’s get some subjunctives all up in thisyolem - I might only live onceyolet - let him only live once!yolemus - let us only live once!WWWOW WE NEED TO SEND THIS TO OUR OLD LATIN TEACHER EVEN THO I DON’T THINK HE TEACHES LATIN ANYMORE Half of me is so glad this exists and the other half is going “NO, you simpletons, stop assuming every strange verb you meet on the highway is first conjugation! The similarity to ‘volo,’ plus the tertiary definition of ‘Fuck you, I do what I want,’ should have tipped you off that ‘yolo’ is part of the velle/nolle/malle group of irregular want/preference verbs.”YOLO YELLE YOLUI, bitches. No, given that the verbs of the first conjugation have the most uniformity in the perfect stem or the perfect participle (almost always -avi, -atus, which is a feature that really is not shared with any other class), that the first conjugation has the most simple verbs (360 of them or so), and that the first conjugation is the most productive one for new verbs in Latin like yolo (it is the most “open class” overall of the conjugations such that it is the “default” for new verbs), it is not the mark of a simpleton to think that strange, new verbs are of the first conjugation. In fact, it is an even bigger problem to assume that every strange verb you meet on the highway potentially is not only irregular, but also is potentially one that is as idiosyncratic and conservative-to-some-pre-Latin-language and not-fully-understood inflection rules as volo, velle! There is another issue here: this velle-inspired inflection of yolo undermines the joke quite a bit not only with the present infinitive yelle, but also even within its present-indicative paradigm: yis, yult, yultis. This is not too much better than insisting that yolo should be iolo. At least yolo, yolare keeps most of the joke (it is true that the o does disappear in inflection, but that is the nature of the beast, and that is something even the velle-inspired inflection of yolo does a well). In the Latin language’s point of view, yolo first comes into the language as an implied undeclinable noun (being an acronym, after all) with a final vowel taken as the stem vowel, -o. This stem vowel is replaced by the verbal stem vowel -a, as what is seen among denominative verbs derived from second-declension (o-stem) nouns. Fortunately, the 1st-singular-present-indicative-active is yolo. But it is hard to see why velle is singled out as a pattern for this new verb other than the “just ‘cause” answer despite the features of the language. But such a “just 'cause” can be used to say that amo should be inflected amo, amis, amut, and so on.So, yeah, the point is that the yolo, yolare conjugation pattern is not something a simpleton would come up with, but rather something proposed by someone who is being a careful Latinist thinking of cogent arguments based on real features of the Latin language. -- source link
