Our Director’s Circle Members were recently treated to an exclusive curator-led tour of one of the Museum’s oldest and most important Egyptian artifacts: The Book of the Dead of the Goldworker of Amun, Sobekmose. Our resident experts Yeketerina Barbash and Edward Bleiberg shared the fascinating origins of the book, its purpose in Egyptian culture, and how it ended up on display in the Museum. Members then got an even closer look at another Book of the Dead, which is currently housed in our Conservation Lab as it is prepared for display. Assistant Paper Conservator Elyse Driscoll gave Members a behind-the-scenes look at the painstaking process of preserving the 5,0000 year old Egyptian papyrus, and shared some of the innovative new methods that our Conservation team is currently testing to best restore such a delicate piece. It was a fascinating look at the life of an artifact, from the moment it arrives at the Museum to the moment it put on display. Not a member, and interested in special behind the scenes tours like this?
